Why I think recruitment is well and truly broken

I think recruitment is well and truly broken.

It saddens me to think this, but quite frankly, I think recruitment is just not in a place where it should be.

Let’s think about this ..

Employers are having to work extra hard to entice, engage, retain and recruit talent, recognising the absolute value of people in their business. A valuable resource, differentiator and leveller in any organisation.  As we know, employers are battling to land talent.

Infact, there is a war for talent.

The greater and more relevant the Candidate’s experience – the more in demand they are.

Candidates hold the power in a job-heavy market.

And remember, candidates aren’t just those actively responding to job adverts, they can be passive too  #hiddenmarket, unreachable by traditional recruitment processes ..

Careers don’t come in straight lines anymore .. it’s about anticipating a left turn when it comes along .. #careercompetencies

So now, more than any other time, is the time when Employers have to think creatively about the recruitment process. Perhaps time to do things differently, in order to get ahead and compete in a heavily competitive market.

Everyone is competing.

Employers are competing to attract the best talent around.

Recruiters are competing to get candidates first past the post.

Candidates are competing to win the job offer.

Recruitment has become all about winning a race, and has completely lost touch with what is really important here.

Recruitment is now a fierce competition amongst rat-race recruiters, the race to submit CVs, ‘first over the line’. With minimum qualification and

minimum service.  #conveyorbeltrecruitment

Candidate duplication has always been and still is the biggest issue in recruitment and can be the most problematic to unravel.

To enable change, we have to hit the reset button and look at how recruiters earn their fee and the service you receive and it has to be less about driving down the service to the lowest fee base. It shouldn't just be about the fee. This is too big an issue to make it just about the fee.

But as an Employer, what are you actually paying for in those ridiculously low fees? Where’s the value the recruiter is providing?

So here’s a pretty radical thought ..

Employers. What service to you actually need from your recruitment partner?  Is it about generating ‘a’ shortlist in 3 days from the selection of people who engage in that 3 day window .. or is it about recommending and engaging with the best the market has to offer?

It’s ironic isn’t it – Careers Pages talk glibly about their people-centric values and employees being at the heart of everything they do. But are they? Really?

And don't get me started on the damage to the Employer Brand through poor Candidate experiences!

Like most things in life, you pay for what you get. And if it's too good to be true – then .. well, you know how it goes ..
